Sam Metz is an artist who explores the concept of \u2018neuroqueering\u2019 ecology. This term refers to the act of challenging societal norms that are hostile towards non-normative neurodivergent individuals. Their practice investigates and responds to the premise of subverting dominant structures that remain confrontational to neurodivergent bodies and minds. Their work explores relational ecology considering chronic pain, disability and visual impairment, focussing on how stimming might support interpretation of landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ciliated sense describes the way the artist’s body vibrates and shimmers – a porous body in conversation with the multiple processes of their situated landscape. The work has an invitation to touch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

POROUS, 2023<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A yellow soya wax cast mallet. The softness of the mallet has a warmth redolent of flesh. Sam has previously smashed wax mallets in the landscape, considering how the body interacts with situated ecology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
